100 x 1 Mile Relay Update

I did run last Thursday. I did a nice warm-up, a kind of fast mile for me, and cooled down. My blog and I had a distracting disagreement over the weekend, so I never did post it. Hopefully I can manage some details later.

So far I’ve recorded 16 miles in our 100 mile relay. Maybe I should have challenged everyone to a virtual marathon relay (26.2 x 1) instead! I also issued this challenge to some of the Penguin yahoogroups.

(part of her Olympic Triathlon)

If I have missed your mile somehow, I humbly apologize. Please bring it to my attention here in the comments and I’ll include it right away.

When the Penguins did it in 2004 Glenn Gabriel did a fabulous job of recording it all. You can see the 2004 May Challenge map and the times?here.

There’s still time to get out there and time your measured mile, folks. Some of you bloggers might even challenge Robb Runner for the fastest mile! Dawn and I will be looking over our prize list and categories in the next 6 days – I hope we have LOTS of entries to choose from.

I know you’re out there running?anyway – why not have a little fun with it and send in a time?

Past Halfway

Up until yesterday none of my long runs have taken me past the halfway point in a marathon. Yesterday, I did it. I ran 25 km/15.5 miles. In a row! One after the other, yep.

It was gloriously warm out. When I awoke at 5:00 a.m. the radio guy said it was already 12C/54F, and I didn’t hit the river pathway to start running until after 7. I?had a full bottle of raspberry Ultima,?2 chocolate Powergels and a couple of homemade orange oatmeal cookies.?I had?applied?Body Glide, Vaseline, and?Ombrelle sun screen (spf 4o). I’d been to the bathroom 3 times and it was time to get out there.?I started out with a smile and total confidence that I was really going to enjoy this. As I ran along I greeted other runners with full fuel belts and gels tucked into the straps of their?drinking backpack systems. Heck, I greeted everybody who gave me eye contact.

Somewhere in the first 15 minutes I smiled at a man out walking his dog. He smiled back,?held a feather out to me and I took it. He told me “Maybe it will help you to run faster!” I carried that feather for the next hour, entwining it between my fingers and using it to remind me to run lightly. I remembered a mantra that *jeanne* uses, “Smooth, Strong, Glide” and it came in handy several times.

I counted 21 geese along the north side of the river before I got to the Eau Claire YMCA bathroom.

*Warning* Gross runner stuff coming up *Warning*

After almost 10 km I suffered a?vivid reminder of why I should be training with Imodium in my system this time of year. I don’t mind the warmth of the day so much in most ways, but it turns my innards to liquid. I was very glad I was running alone, because exactly one minute before I made it to the bathroom my body made a distressingly gurgly noise when it was supposed to be farting. Oh great.

And there, between me and the bathroom, was Gord of his own Running Store and his lovely wife and family. “Hi folks! Yep,?gorgeous day. 2 more hours to go!” I’m glad I’m not on a hugging basis with them – I really didn’t want to get close to anyone right then. It took me nine minutes to clean up half decently in the bathroom, and my “lucky long run underwear” just about became disposable. Lucky for the undies, I had a spare snack-size, sealable?baggie on hand. If I hadn’t potty trained two children earlier in my life I’d probably be selecting a new pair of undies to deem “lucky”.?Good for me, I’d also packed a panty liner and am very, very grateful for the liner in my running shorts.

We will now resume our cheery, poop-free report.

?*Done with the gross runner stuff now*

I was glad to be back on the pathway. Especially glad, because within 2 minutes of resuming my run I enjoyed the truly majestic view of a half-naked, totally ripped, tanned torso coming my way. Man, the scenery was breathtaking.

I did an extra little loop around Prince’s Island to extend my previous?21 km?out and back route?to 24 km. Then?I headed up the curling club hill and instead of going directly back down again, continued on to Center Street and down the bridge there. I enjoyed a gentler descent and added on the last extra km (to make the?whole thing total 25 km)?to the middle of my route at the same time. Now all I had to do was run back to my car, about 10 km away.

As I ran along the south side of the river I spotted none other than the Mayor running towards me. He touched a plaque near one of the statues at 14th Street and turned around to run the other way. Everybody has their little rituals, even the Mayor.

I counted 4 more geese before getting back to the north side of the river. There were all kinds of trees blooming along the way; purple and white lilacs, wolf willow, honeysuckle, fruit trees?totally covered in white and pink petals. I realized I’d left the feather back in the bathroom. Shoot. Oh well, run light anyway. I heard a train chugging on through and it reminded me to just keep that momentum going “like a freight train, baby”. I thought of Nancy doing her olympic?distance?triathlon race that morning and wondered how she fared.

I’d been running 10/1s?for?over 2.5 hours and still had about 5 km to make it back to the car. Things were starting to ache now, but I kept on putting one foot in front of the other. At one point I resorted to counting each of my steps as if it were the first. “One, one, one, one, one…”

There were lots more folks out on the pathway now – kids falling asleep in strollers, all sizes of dogs and their owners, etc. As if I hadn’t seen enough famous people for one morning, I waved hello to Gord Gillies, a local newsguy, running along with someone else not far from Edworthy Park.

I made it back to my car, stopped the watch, and flopped down in a shady, grassy spot. You know, “to stretch”.?For the first minute or two?I just looked up through leaves of a big poplar tree at the blue sky, and then I did actually manage a few stretches before heading home. A cool bath, a warm shower and a change of clothes later and I made 3 omelettes for lunch with my family. On the calendar I had guesstimated it might take me 3:20 to complete this distance. My watch reads 3:20:50. The legs were tired and achy the rest of the day, but the smile never left.?There’s nothing like running a new longest distance. I’m looking forward to my next one!

Hot Running & Dirty Feet

I don’t usually get to post titles like that for another couple of months, but yesterday and today our high temperatures have broken records over a hundred years old (30 & 31 C in MAY!). It didn’t stop me from running, though – I considered it an opportunity to acclimatize for a hot summer 🙂

One of my running buddies from last winter is recovering from physio and was allowed to run for no longer than 30 minutes last night. She did well at my speed, though, so we took Gord’s short option. We went down the curling club stairs, along the river to Langevin bridge, and up the Holly Park hill in front of the Ukrainian church. My left calf complained some in the first 10 minutes, but I ignored it and it stretched out/warmed up nicely going up the Holly Park hill.

We made it to within two blocks of the store before my watch ticked over to 30 minutes, and walked it in. Tanya headed off home, and I still had some training time on my hands. er, feet. I ran back over to the top of the curling club stairs where there was a nice, flat, quiet block and ran about 6 x 30 second repeats back and forth, leaving 30 seconds of recovery in between.

There were some women exercising in the little park next to the street, and the new, green grass looked sooooo cool. You can guess what I did next….

… I took off my shoes! and ran barefoot through the grass! I ran up and down the block beside the curb for about 5 minutes, experimenting with my form. Aside from the occasional stray pinecone, it was quite fun.

Hopefully in the next day or two I’ll have an update on how we’re doing with our May Challenge, the 100 x 1 mile virtual relay. I have yet to get my mile in, too.

Mother’s Day 5k

The Forzani’s Mother’s Day race in Calgary is my raceversary (7 years!).?This 10k was my first running goal in my adult-onset fitness quest. Every year since then (except for last year), my family has been accustomed to me getting up early on Mother’s Day and sneaking out before they can muster breakfast in bed.

This year I took Little Runner along with me for her very first 5k (she’s done 1 milers up until now). We hadn’t done much training together, so I planned on walking much of it. It’s a HUGE race (14,000 people), with lots of walkers and runners of all ages, sizes and speeds.

We?took the C-train downtown to meet?Dawn and her girls?in the starting line?crowd. They were easy to find, with all their pink clothes.?We also met up with?Ronald McDonald and I snapped a shot of LR with him.

We started waaaaaay at tronaldmcdonald.jpghe back of the runners, just in front of the walkers. It took quite awhile to get across the start line, but once we did, we started running. We were later told that it took 25 minutes for everyone to get across the start line. There must have been 5k racers finishing before some walkers even started!

After the first km Little Runner noticed that Ronald McDonald was actually running the race, not just hanging around the start like the other mascots. We decided that one of our goals would be to stay ahead of him, and it was very motivating to her. Several times I had to tell her to quit looking back and or he would catch up.

?

There was a lot of entertainment en route this year. The nice weather probably encouraged more musicians to come out.

?There were drummers, a brass jazz trio, a fantastic soul singer with a western back-up band, a cuban dance group, a mexican songstress, a fiddler with accompaniment, a marimba, and a bagpipe band.

ktcupstomping.jpgWe lost a little time at the water stop when Little Runner?got caught up in crushing paper cups.?Once she remembered she was in a race, however, she took off like a shot. I sprinted after her and remarked “Wow! What did they put in that water!”

We made up time in the second half by spotting?pipylon.jpgnk t-shirts?ahead of us and catching up to them. We caught up to one little pink-fleeced girl several times. We ran out of pink shirts in the last 300 meters, but LR decided that touching pylons as we ran by helped keep her going.

We cheered on 10kers over in the next lane as they zipped by and I saw Karin Gerlach zipping past.?

alanlam.jpgOne of the Calgary Roadrunners, Alan Lam, was cheering on runners at the last corner and we beergirl.jpgsnapped our cameras at each other. Little Runner was very excited when she saw the finish and I snapped this photo in the previous post before running in behind her.

After snagging some snacks?we found Dawn et al and Little Runner went around hugging a bunch of mascots. I made sure I stopped by the Jackrabbit beer sample table. Penguin buddy Nancy found us and we hung out for awhile and reminisced about previous Mother’s Day races.

After the mascot, toddler and preschooler races the awards?and door?prizes were announced and we headed back to the train.?We got home at around noon, heated up a little lunch and put our feet up for a bit.

Busy Weekend

… and we’re only half way through it!

Last night I picked up Dawn and we went down to the Mother’s Day race expo to pick up our packets and do some shopping. Great Clips was there doing “free” haircuts for donations, and I snagged a nice little trim for $10. I picked up some free samples of various products, Little Runner had her caricature drawn, and we visited with Coach Dianne and others. Time flew by and we didn’t leave until 9 pm.

?I was up this morning at 6 a.m., made Hubby coffee and lunch for later (I only do this once in a while. He’s working the 6:30 am shift today). Drank some coffee, ate some toast, and waited for the digestive system to realize I was planning on running long today. I had hoped to get out the door around 7:30 so I could run for two hours before having to take Soccer Boy to practice, but didn’t get out until 8:30. Little Runner slept in until 8 (unheard of), but was deeply entranced by the t.v. when I left.

I ran 5k with two hills, one small and one medium. My hands were cold in the first mile and I think I might have seen my breath once or twice. After that I warmed up and the cold wind wasn’t so bad. The sunshine was deceiving. I wore shorts and a SL shirt, but the wind was chilly. After the first loop in 33ish minutes I popped in to make sure my kids hadn’t killed each other yet. Soccer Boy was on the computer, but now was going to get ready for soccer practice. Right now. Yup, now.

?I went back out and did?a second 5k loop on the same course in reverse. This one took a little longer, putting my total?time for the?10 km at 1:12. I stopped the watch and got Little Runner dressed so she wouldn’t have to come along in her jammies. Soccer Boy sprang into action and finished getting ready. As we were leaving the house for practice, who but one of SB’s coaches showed up. He’d come for the key to get the team’s soccer equipment (Hubby is the equipment guy for the league). Well heck, did he have room to take SB to practice, while he was at it? Yes.

?Huzzah!?(hey, I think I like that word)

I stuck LR back in front of the t.v. again, ate a Nutrigrain bar, answered an e-mail and headed back out the door one more time. This time I did a 6 km loop, stopping only for the occasional drink break and to take a few pictures of wildflowers. I felt pretty darn good in this last loop. I should take 20 minute breaks at the 10k point in my 16 km runs more often!

Towards the end I ran past a crescent in which friends of ours were participating in a multi-family garage sale. I jogged over to Frankie and said to her “Got anything really good? and LIGHT?” It took her a couple of seconds to realize that of course I wouldn’t be buying anything heavy while I was out running. As she laughed heartily I added “preferably with two wheels? and a motor?” More laughs as she pointed out her daughter’s old pink bicycle. “Sorry, no motor, but there’s that.” I snapped a pic of the bike and a pink bear on a chair for my friend the Pink Lady and carried on home.

?LR and I picked up SB from practice at 11:30?and headed home for lunch.?Tuna sandwich for him, leftover spaghetti pie for LR and me. I drank down two big glasses of 2% milk too. Aahhh.

By 12:145 we were back in the car taking SB to Referee a game at 1 pm. Spent 20 minutes figuring out how to get his bike to fit in the trunk first. As I made sure?I had him at the right field, he realized he’d left his stopwatch, penalty cards and whistle at home. I gave him my running watch for the first Half, and went back home to?get them for him. At least I didn’t have to go pick him up, because he would be riding his bike back down the hill home.

?So did I go home then? Have a shower, a nap, maybe? Nooooo.

LR wanted to?browse some garage sales, so I stopped at two. She?is thrilled to bits?with her new acquisitions:
– 1 stuffed dog she’s named Lucy (on the promise that it replace Grover, a ratty old one that I don’t like much)
– 1 flowery-dressed Barbie
– 1 Barbie-sized bike
– 1 set of 2 Playmobil horses, complete with riders and fences, so she can play “Spruce Meadows”.
I came home with a new set of black flat shoes, very suitable for work.

Shower-time now. Then supper, some laundry, and early to?bed. Big day tomorrow, too. I’m glad I went to the race package pick-up last night instead of leaving it until today. Photos later tonight, I hope.

Running Across Alberta

alberta.jpgNo, not me. I’m not doing that, but a friend just told me about someone who is. Carlene of the Penguin Runners yahoogroup brought this incredible person’s quest to raise money for colon cancer to my attention, and I just had to share it with you all. Thanks, Carlene!

Danielle’s already run through Calgary, and for some reason (I should follow the news more often) I missed it. As an Albertan, a Calgarian, and best buddy of someone who’s mom is fighting colon cancer, I want to support Danielle in her quest. I hope you all will drop in at her web site and leave some encouraging comments (and a donation, if you can) for her.

A Little of Everything

I’ve been running a lot of hills lately, and haven’t done any speedwork (aside from tempo pace occasionally on Tuesdays, trying to keep up with Tim and Krista), so last night I did some 30/30s. Coach Derek of the Calgary Roadrunners had us doing these at the track last winter. Linae did a set of 30/30s the other day and that reminded/inspired me to do some of my own.

I had another obligation last night as well – Soccer Boy had a game in Hawkwood, a ‘burb-on-a-hill nearby. I drove him to his game, smack dab in the middle of the hill-‘burb, wished him well, and took off running upwards. Warming up while running upwards sucks big time, but after about 5 minutes of up and 15 more of flat I decided I was ready for the speedwork. I had set my watch to beep every thirty seconds and thought maybe I would do 18 repeats, like Coach had set us to do last winter.

I kept track of the repeats using my fingers, because I didn’t want to be checking my watch to see how much time I had left. first 5 or 6 repeats it was like my body didn’t know what to do.

“Fast? Who me? You want me to what?”

Then something clicked and my body remembered why I was trying to lean forward and use my toes more etc. I breezed through 7-10 and then started counting down.

“Only 8 more. Maybe we should do 20, like Linae did. What? This is HARD. Not 20. C’mon, Linae did… We’ll see.”

By 17 I was heading back to the soccer game, I’d literally reached a red light and didn’t want to turn around, so I hit the pedestrian crossing button and waited through 2 beeps for the light to change. Now I had to do 20, because I hadn’t done 18 in a row.

After the 20th one I stopped the incessant beeping of my watch – in the last half it seemed like it was beeping ALL THE TIME, drank a little Gatorade and took a wee walk break. I jogged back down towards the soccer field, taking a winding pathway that worked in a couple of knolls and one steep but short hill before I got back to the game.

Soccer Boy’s team was winning when I got there, but let in a couple of goals towards the end for a 3-3 tie. Hmm. Gotta work on those boys’ endurance.

NOTHING on the calendar tonight. No refereeing, no soccer, no Boys n Girls club, no running, NOTHING. Ahhhhh. I’m going to rest up and get ready for a busy weekend.

Bike Ride

Last night I walked with Soccer Boy to show him the way to a game he had to referee a kilometer away. We walked very briskly, because he was a little late, and then I briskly walked home, to continue the exercise. As I was leaving him at the game, I saw a couple of Police Officers on bicycles cruising out of the community center parking lot and we exchanged friendly hellos.

Once I got home I dug out Olga, my circa 1990s mountain bike for a little jaunt around the neighbourhood. Olga doesn’t even have click gears, she’s so old. I bought her for $30 about 5? years ago from an ad in the Bargain Finder. She’s not light or fast or anything like that, but she never complains and gives me some non-running exercise when I make the time.

I rode around for a little bit and then stopped to watch the boy finish refereeing the U10 game. Together we walked to his buddy’s place to pick up his bike. I thought he had left his helmet with his bike, so hadn’t brought it with me. It’s illegal in Calgary for minors to ride without a helmet, so I made him wear my uncool one.

On the way home we waved a cheery hello to the two cycling Police Officers again, and I only realized after we’d passed them by that I must have looked like a terrible parent, not wearing my helmet while out riding with my kid. That would explain the quizzical look they gave me while waving hello. It’s ironic that if I hadn’t been a good parent by wearing my helmet in the first place, my kid would have broken the law riding home without one (or had to walk his bike home). Too funny!
